To Whom It May Concern:

Asheville Primary School is a public Montessori that services students PreK-3rd grade. Our educational model promotes student centered practices and hands-on experiences. High Touch and High Tech (HTHT) is an excellent accompaniment to our curriculum. Montessori encourages students to research non-fiction topics that are of interest to them. HTHT supports student interests in science and aligns with NC standards. All of our classrooms have had at least 3 “going-outs” with HTHT. A “going-out” is the Montessori equivalent of a field trip. The scientists have been absolutely amazing. Teachers and students have given very positive feedback regarding their experiences with HTHT. The HTHT scientists demonstrate the ability to be flexible and to meet the needs of each classroom. We have chosen to partner with HTHT again as a result of the consistent positive experiences they have provided our children. HTHT encourages student exploration and problem solving. This is the heart of our program. We are grateful to have a community organization that supports the curiosity of children! I highly recommend HTHT to schools that seek to support rigorous and joyful student-centered experiences.

Word Slam Poetry and STEAM

On Friday, April 29th there will be a Asheville Word Slam taking place at the Dr. Wesley Grant Southside Center from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. High Touch High Tech is sponsoring this community event in support of STEAM education and community involvement.

STEAM education is and acronym for the studies of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Adding Art and Design into STEM education is crucial in order for future generations to drive innovation. So how does Slam Poetry fit into the realm of STEAM education? Slam Poetry is a type of Art where the poets recite their own work or work from others that use dynamics (going from a whisper to a shout), pacing (speeding up and slowing down) and pausing to add drama. This type of Art is a great way to inspire individuals in an audience about different topics. Topics can include current events, social issues, religion, and much more!

New Climate Change Non-Profit Could Change Asheville’s Future Economy

There’s a new non-profit in town! 

The Collider, a non-profit seeking to combine business and science on the topic of climate change, launched in the Wells Fargo Building on Friday, March 11, 2016 in Asheville. 

NASA released a statement saying that February 2016 has been the “Most Abnormally Warm Month Ever Recorded”. With that news it is growing more and more important to tackle the issues of global warming and climate change. Which is exactly what the Collider is setting out to do!

“The Collider is a solutions laboratory,” said Bill Dean, The Collider CEO, who has developed research parks in the space industry of Huntsville, Ala., and biotechnology in Winston-Salem’s new research corridor. “This is a viable business model for Asheville. We will have a global reach but happen to be based here in Asheville.”

According to local Asheville newspaper, The Citizen Times, 

Dean said The Collider could help generate ideas to shift crops in changing climates to prevent famine and food shortages, or help plan for more resilient roads and subways to withstand superstorms like Sandy, which devastated New Jersey and flooded lower Manhattan in 2012.

Dealing with climate change could heat up Asheville’s future economy with better paying jobs in a potential $1 trillion industry.

HTHT WNC Visits Claxton Elementary School in Asheville, NC!

HTHT WNC Engages Students at Claxton Elementary School on March 27, 2015!

The students in Ms. Sophia’s First grade class at Claxton Elementary in Asheville, North Carolina had the pleasure of doing hands – on science experiments with High Touch High Tech of Western North Carolina’s scientist, Asteroid Amber. Amber spent the morning in the classroom with this first grade class teaching them all about what plants need to survive. She helped them to explore the world’s ecosystems, the five laws of nature, different types of seeds and how they all play a part to nature’s delicate balance. The students got hands-on in this program as they extracted real chlorophyll!! They even got to build their very own greenhouses to keep!
